QIYU brings Chinese calligraphy and painting into everyday life through original work, personal service and a living connection to artistic tradition.

“Every work should carry the movement of the brush, the character of the artist and a meaning for the person receiving it.”

Founder & principal artist

黄城晖 Huang Chenghui

Born in 1967, Huang Chenghui began learning calligraphy from his father in childhood. His practice draws from Yan Zhenqing’s regular script, Zhao Mengfu’s running script and the study of seal script developed through seal carving.

From his Chinatown shop, he has spent many years writing spring couplets and creating works for weddings, new homes, businesses and personalised Chinese names.

Before you enquire

Questions,
answered simply.

Every name is handled personally. These answers explain what to expect before QIYU begins writing.

How is my English name translated into Chinese?+

QIYU selects Chinese characters that suit the sound of your name while aiming for a pleasant, positive meaning. The translated name is confirmed before the artwork is written.

Does it cost more to include several names?+

No. One person, a couple or a family may be included without an additional name charge.

Which style is best for a family?+

Most customers choose one of the four smaller formats. With three or four names, the writing may simply need to be smaller. QIYU normally recommends the large scroll only for five or more names, or when three or more translated names each require four or more Chinese characters.

Can I add a red 爱 or 家?+

Yes, one red character—爱 for Love or 家 for Family—may be added to a vertical artwork at no extra charge.

Can a small Chinese painting be added?+

Yes. A hand-painted detail such as bamboo may be added for S$3.

Is every piece really handwritten?+

Yes. Each piece is written individually with brush and ink, then finished with the artist’s seal. Natural variations are part of its character.
